As humans we make thousands of decisions daily. Unfortunately, they don’t give each decision the same attention. Instead they take mental short cuts. We call them BIAS. Hence the name of our book ‘Bias Impacts:how culture and diversity affect the leadership journey.’
It talks about the personal impact of bias. There are all sorts of biases. Similarity Bias for instance. So, we originally titled Chapter 1 ‘People like them’. In business, this sort of bias typically occurs in people decisions – recruiting, promoting, delegating. Our brains instinctively select ‘in groups and ‘out groups’. Unfortunately, we then have a more favourable view of people like us.
In part 2 of the Stateside radio interview with Mary Delaney, Patrick talks of the impact of this behaviour when it comes to recruitment.
